Did Home Builders Trade Off Better Land Pricing to Juice Cash Generation? Cliches do their work and get tired for good reasons. They're often annoyingly obvious and aggravatingly true. "Be careful what you wish for," for instance. Way back when--in December and January--as we were tallying up Net Operating Loss tax refunds home builders recouped after the extension from 24 months to 60 months backward, the clawback number quickly climbed well north of $2 billion without so much as breaking a sweat....

On the Danger of Doing Away with Housing-Related Tax Deductions I have to be totally up front and say that I am very passionate about these issues because, well, to put it simply, I'm directly affected. I am a homeowner and, therefore, pay interest on my mortgage and property taxes and consequently benefit from the current tax law, which allows me to deduct these costs. And in my case, I feel it's a significant benefit to my household economy. These deductions allow me to access a tax refund, which I then pretty much sink right back into my house--and yes, I have a fixer upper. ...

Homeward Bound That's right, dear readers, this displaced Californian is heading back to the Golden State. As such, I regret to inform you that this will be my last official Big Builder blog post. That's the bad news. The good news: John McManus, Sarah Yaussi, and I decided it would be a great idea if I punctuated my roadtrip with visits to various home builders and documented my progress along the way. I'll be snapping photos, shooting some video, and talking with several industry members to get a new perspective on the housing downturn. Be sure to keep an eye on Big Builder's Twitter updates for the full story as it unfolds, or you can follow me directly. The adventure kicks off a week from today on Thursday, Feb. 26. Wish me luck!...

A Quarter Through the Quarterly Reports... A fourth of the way into the summer home-builder earnings season, it has become apparent that a) new-home sales dropped precipitously after the homebuyer tax credit expired at the end of April and b) there is as yet no sign that sales are picking up. ...

On a land light note ... In the weekly Big Builder meeting earlier this week, other editors and I were, not surprisingly, discussing the future of builders from all aspects--product, business model, land, cash positions, and so on. Then today I came across and article via Google Alerts notifying me of a way builders could take land out of the equation--build it on water!...
