On a land light note ...In the weekly Big Builder meeting earlier this week, other editors and I were, not surprisingly, discussing the future of builders from all aspects--product, business model, land, cash positions, and so on. Then today I came across and article via Google Alerts notifying me of a way builders could take land out of the equation--build it on water!... Making an impression in OhioIn early March, as companies were filing for bankruptcy, unemployment and foreclosure rates were rising, and many builders were beginning to implement jobless benefits to home buyers, M/I Homes moved forward with opening a design center in one of the nation's largest malls--Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio.... Will Comstock rise from the ashes?On March 31, Reston, Va.-based, quasi-public builder Comstock Homebuilding Co. released its annual numbers with a dismal admittance from CEO Christopher Clemente: "If unsuccessful in its efforts to generate free cash flow and restructure its debts with its lenders, the company may be forced to seek bankruptcy protection while it reorganizes."... Helping out their ownThe disappointing cuts the United States House of Representatives made to the proposed $15,000 home buyer tax credit to $8,000 in February, has state legislators moving towards getting their own constituents a tax break on their home turf. In February California passed a $10,000 home buyer tax credit in addition to the federal $8,000 first-time home buyer tax credit. Now numerous other states are moving towards setting up individual state home buyer tax credits, or implementing programs that will get qualified residents a 0% interest secondary loan so buyers can take advantage of the federal tax credit for use as a down payment.
